AI search freshness

Freshness describes how quickly a newly published or updated fact becomes available to a search experience. The process is not instantaneous. A crawler must discover the URL, fetch a successful response, interpret the document, and decide whether the page belongs in an index or retrieval store. An answer system may then rely on a different schedule before it can cite that source. Publication time, crawl time, indexing time, and first visible result are therefore separate milestones rather than one event.

A practical freshness test records the last failed check and the first successful check. The actual transition occurred somewhere inside that interval, so reporting an exact minute would imply precision the observations do not support. Consistent queries, region, language, and session conditions make comparisons more useful. Submission tools can invite a crawler to revisit a URL, but they do not promise inclusion or ranking. For publishers, the goal is to determine whether normal site signals are sufficient or whether an explicit request produces a meaningful reduction in discovery delay across repeated releases.
